22 reasons why Norfolk is THE All-American city






  1. We have AltDaily
  2. We have Veer Magazine
  3. We have The Virginian-Pilot and The Daily Deal
  4. We have Bruce Thompson, even though he lives in Virginia Beach.
  5. We have a creative and vibrant underclass.
  6. We have an underclass. You can’t miss their street fashion.  
  7. We have Better Blocks. You can recognize them by the pigs and chickens painted on the sidewalks. 
  8. We have fully accredited schools.
  9. We have free parking. Yeah, right.  
  10. We sell Brazilian bathing suits on Granby Street
  11. We have a cruise terminal. If only we had cruise ships. 
  12. We will have a hotel and conference center. 
  13. We raise homes three feet higher so contractors don’t get catch some kind of disease or bit by muskrats. It’s called flood mitigation.
  14. We have a downtown park located across from the federal courthouse with “no trespassing” signs posted everywhere.
  15. We have food carts
  16. We have more 7-11s, pawnshops and payday lenders per city block than other cities.  
  17. We have Waterside, soon to be a theme park.
  18. We have the only nautical gay pride parade in America.  
  19. We have Mike Herron’s book, Testosterone, The Men Things People Say
  20. We have the only gay nautical pride parade in America.
  21. We have tolls. (Or we will have tolls.)
  22. We have beaches with cigarette butts.   Sorry. that,s Virginia Beach.

        7. Eh, we almost have cruise ships this year. One. For 2 months (may and october) but next year, no cruise ships. None.
