Auction of Granby Theater forestalled

Malendowski and Cathy, The Wright Co.
The auction of property on Granby Street, which included the Granby Theater, never occurred.

The property, listed as parcels 421,423 and 425 Granby Street, was supposed to be auctioned at Norfolk Circuit Court this morning at 10am.

“The theater isn’t closing,” said Chris Malendoski, associate broker for The Wright Co.

Owner Bobby Wright is the principal of 421 Granby LLC, the company that owns the property.
“The theater won’t change ownership,” said Malendoski, who appeared at the court house this morning.

Malendoski said the Granby Theater had a great weekend.

But he declined to say anything more about the status of the property.
“I am not a liberty to say anything else,” he said.

Only two people showed for the auction. One was Virginian-Pilot reporter Sarah Kleiner-Varble.
The other was H. Blount Hunter, owner of consulting firm H. Blount Hunter Retail and Research, though he didn’t identify himself.

“I’m not speaking to the press,” he said, leaving the court house steps, when he was recognized.

Hunter, who was one of several consultants hired to analyze the future of Waterside, was Wright’s partner in the Welton building, which was refurbished for condominiums, according to press reports.
