Nautical Channel on Local TV?
Do you want to see bodacious babes on yachts? Or gorgeous guys hanging out
amidships?You can, if you subscribe to Dish network, which carries the Nautical channel.
You can't, if you subscribe to Cox cable.
The Nautical channel is making a big splash in the U.S. with its nautical sports and lifestyle channel.
Apparently, Nautical channel CEO Laurence Hopper visited Norfolk a few weeks ago. The channel plans to cover local events in the region and televise them worldwide in five languages.
But the hang-up is with Cox. It doesn't have a sports channel that covers and televises international nautical sports and lifestyle.
City officials, headed by Mayor Paul Fraim, are urging Cox Communications to contact Hopper and have the Nautical channel televised locally.
The publicity would do something that no minor or major sports team could do for the region.I admit, this is hyperbole. Still, here's a chance for the region to shine.
But, how will commentators refer to our region? Hampton Roads? Greater Norfolk area, Coastal Virginia? Or Tidewater?
The Weldon Center for Public Service, based in Charlottesville, released its population projections for 2020, 2030 and 2040. For simplicity, I tabulated the projected population for the seven major cities in Tidewater for 2020.
Hampton, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach are expected to lose population while Norfolk, Newport News, Chesapeake and Suffolk will see their populations increase.

Food for Thought:
- Light rail should be extended to Chesapeake first, since it will gain population, instead of Virginia Beach.
- Portsmouth (or downtown at least) should merge with Norfolk.
- Hampton should merge with Newport News.
