The Ear - Heard on the Street

Should Evans Poston become Norfolk Commissioner of the Revenue (highly likely), it is rumored that he will hire Paula Miller, former legislator, public relations and media veteran.

News flash: Paula Miller refutes this rumor. "I am definitely not going to work for him. But I am definitely going to vote for him."

Still more lay-offs are planned for the Virginian-Pilot and its sister publications, sources have told me. The second round of lay-offs is scheduled for April or May, 2014. A total of 32 employees are scheduled to leave by the end of this year.

John Reinhart, retiring CEO of Maersk Line Limited, a subsidiary of Danish-based AP-Moeller Maersk, has been tagged as the next CEO of the Virginia Port Authority, sources say. Reihart is a likely candidate. Boyden, an executive search firm, was hired to find the port’s new CEO.  Boyden executive Tim McNamara, led the search. McNamara has extensive ties to Denmark. He worked for Blaesberg Heavy Lift, a Danish company based in Aarhus, Denmark, and he was the Danish Consulate in Baltimore.

Norfolk plans to retire or lay-off 470 employees, sources tell me. Details are sketchy at this point. But it appears as though city employees over 60 have been enticed with generous retirement and bonus packages.

Is a well-known agitator and civil rights advocate planning to run for mayor of Norfolk next May? Promises..Promises.

The Virginia Supreme Court is expected to hear arguments Oct. 30 in a civil case pitting Virginian-Pilot Media Companies v. Philip D. Webb.
