In 10 days, the Granby Theater property will be auctioned on
the steps of Norfolk Circuit Court. (Virginian-Pilot, July 24, p. 2, Classifieds)
The Aug. 5 auction marks more than a decade of attempts by
Bobby Wright, the owner, to invigorate Granby Street with entertainment.
But his attempts have been cyclical and plagued by out of
control crowds and a shooting death.
Unlike Have A Nice Day Café and Bar Norfolk, whose alcohol
licenses were revoked due to public criticism of rowdy crowds and shootings,
the Granby Theater maintained a balance between providing entertainment and
appeasing city officials and Norfolk City Council members.

Four years ago, the city essentially shut down the Granby Theater nightclub
after a fatal shooting inside. It was later allowed to reopen. In August 2009,
the council stripped two Waterside clubs - Have a Nice Day Cafe and Bar Norfolk
- of their licenses to serve alcohol. Burfoot and Fraim led that effort.

constructed circa 1915. Early photos of the theater are reminiscent of the
vaudeville and movie houses, hugely popular during this era in many American
cities.
